En 1960, Marlon Brando décide de passer derrière la caméra pour tourner ce qui sera son seul film en tant que réalisateur : One Eyed Jacks. À la fin de One Eyed Jacks, le héros, réconcilié avec lui-même, s’éloigne vers l’horizon sur son cheval avec l’espoir, un peu abusif, de retrouver sa fiancée au printemps pour la naissance de leur enfant. Cette fin romantique n’annonçait en rien le retour de Brando dans l’univers du western, dans la peau d’un tueur à gages, aussi mystérieux que sadique, pour les besoins du très beau (et très violent) western d’Arthur Penn The Missouri Breaks.

La transformation qu’il s’apprête à subir est donc invariablement présentée comme la réparation d’une injustice. Le geste doit en être un de réappropriation d’une identité perdue ou jamais complètement assumée, et non comme l’expression d’un désir égoïste. L’équipe des spécialistes chargés de mettre en œuvre les diverses opérations est alors introduite, chacun pratiquant à l’écran son diagnostic et les actions qu’il s’apprête à prendre. Le sujet est ensuite complètement isolé de son milieu pour plusieurs semaines, période qui nous est présentée sous la forme d’un montage des transformations, invariablement ponctué par une série d’aveux prononcés par le « cobail » – à ce stade, il en vraiment toutes les apparences -, découragement et enthousiasme se succédant à mesure que son apparence se transforme.
La fiction télévisée semble suivre en ce moment deux directions distinctes: soit elle emprunte massivement au cinéma certaines de ses caractéristiques, ouvrant au sein de l’espace télévisuel un créneau « cinéphilique »; soit elle tente par divers moyens de jouer jusqu’au bout le jeu de la télévision et tende ainsi à adapter sa stratégie aux caractéristiques propres du petit écran.
Alors que Guy Laliberté, grâce à l’assistance veule et bénévole des médias, tente de fasciner le monde avec la promotion de sa Fondation One Drop, la lecture ou la relecture de Don Quichotte s’avère hautement désaltérante. Sûrement pas pour comparer le Chevalier à la Triste Figure à la tête heureuse de Guy Laliberté, mais pour l’y opposer.
Réflexion à partir de trois films : Blanche-Neige de Monteiro, Hurlements en faveur de Sade de Debord et La mort du jeune aviateur anglais de Duras. L’auteur pose la problématique de la jointure entre le texte (sa transformation par le médium cinématographique) et une image entièrement noire.
