“Vous avez peut-être vu les photos et vidéos de l’explosion qui a secoué Beyrouth à 18h08 le 4 août. Sa violence est au-delà de ce qu’on pouvait imaginer. À ce jour, on dénombre 178 morts et des milliers de blessés et de personnes déplacées. Beaucoup ont perdu leurs femmes, leurs maris, leurs enfants, leurs amant.e.s, leurs maisons et leurs moyens de subsistance. Les manifestations qui ont eu lieu après la catastrophe, contre le système politique incrusté représenté par le gouvernement libanais, ont été reçues par encore plus de violence, des gaz lacrymogènes, des balles en caoutchouc, des plombs et de la répression. L’état d’urgence militaire a été déclaré et menace notre liberté de protester et de nous dresser contre un régime qui a littéralement tout fait sauter. À la lumière de cette situation, nous avons sélectionné plusieurs films de Beyrouth et sur Beyrouth qui seront projetés dans différentes villes du monde. Les dons collectés lors de ces projections seront placés là où ils sont le plus nécessaires pour soutenir directement des personnes et subvenir à leurs besoins immédiats.” (Nour Ouayda, Philip Widmann)

En juillet 1982, l’armée israélienne assiège Beyrouth. Quatre jours plus tôt, Jocelyne Saab voit samaison brûler et 150 ans partir en fumée. Elle se pose alors la question : quand tout cela a-t-il commencé ?Chaque lieu deviendra alors une histoire et chaque nom une mémoire… histoire d’un siège. Avec un texte et la voix de Roger Assaf.

Le voyage immobile

Le voyage immobile est ce dialogue en devenir prenant la forme d’un film composé de sons, interprété par des mots, perforé par des images toujours en mouvement. Un échange entre les deux cinéastes, ce film est un sixième sens qu’ils ont nourri dans un monde devenu sans visage.Leur essai cinématographique est une tentative personnelle d’être deux en un.

De sa voiture qui parcourt Beyrouth, une femme – la mère de la cinéaste, qui lui dédie son film –parle sans arrêt au téléphone. Elle appelle la banque. Elle appelle ceux qui lui doivent de l’argent. Elle appelle ceux qui lui prêtent et ceux qui lui empruntent.

“You have seen the pictures and videos of the explosion that shook Beirut at 6:08 pm on August 4t h . It was larger than anyone can imagine. Till today, there are 178 deaths and thousands of injured and displaced. Many have lost their wives, husbands, kids, lovers, homes and livelihoods. Protests against the encrusted political system represented by the Lebanese government took place after the catastrophe and were answered with more violence, tear gas, rubber bullets, pellets, repression. A state of military emergency was declared and is threatening our freedom to protest and stand against a regime that has literally blown us all up. In light of this situation, we have selected several films from and about Beirut to be screened in various cities around the world. The donations collected at these screenings will be put where they’re needed most at the moment, and where they directly help people sustain their livelihoods.” (Nour Ouayda, Philip Widmann)

As Far as Yearning is that dialogue-in-progress taking the shape of a film composed by sound, performed by words, perforated by images still in motion. Ghassan Salhab and Mohamed Soueid are embracing a sense of survival. This film is a sixth sense they nurtured in a world that has become faceless. Their film essay is a personal attempt to be two in one. Disguised as men, they walk among men who left behind their shadows.
